No question, Fetty Wap’s "Trap Queen" is one of the 2010s' essential hip-hop tracks. The song itself, sung in that strained melodic rap style that’s popular now but was both fresh and innovative when it arrived in 2015, became a massive pop crossover hit. Along with “679,” it propelled the previously unknown Jersey rapper’s self-titled debut album to the coveted #1 spot in its first week on the charts. Additionally, the ascendant journey that “Trap Queen” took from Soundcloud obscurity to 25 weeks on the Billboard Top 10 and two GRAMMY noms, laid the bricks for what would eventually become a somewhat standard career path for the rest of the decade - one that Billie Eilish, Juice Wrld and others paced to their own stardom. It’s rare that an artist shows up at our studio to play an old hit. That Fetty crossed the Hudson River to throw down his classic proves that he’s proud of his past accomplishments. He should be proud of current ones, too. His latest record ‘Butterfly Effect' puts his inimitable vocal style up front.
