The $1 billion plant will be located in Manisa province. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to announce the agreement on Monday. This new plant could give BYD easier access to the European Union due to Turkey's customs union agreement.

Electric vehicles accounted for 7.5 percent of Turkey's car sales last year. Turkey has nearly 90 million people. In March 2023, Turkey imposed a 40 percent surcharge on tariffs for electric vehicles imported from China. However, Turkey recently eased these tariffs to encourage investment.

BYD opened its first electric vehicle factory in Thailand on Thursday. The company is also building plants in Brazil and Mexico. BYD has a plant in Hungary but limited presence in Europe.
