In this video we'll do a complete teardown and demo of an all-original, vintage Magnatone 260 tube combo amp. This was near Maggie's top of the line at the time and featured their innovative and impressive frequency modulating vibrato circuit. This patented circuit, also called the "F.M. Vibrato", used a 12ax7 oscillator circuit, two 6CG7 tubes, and four varistors, also known as a voltage-dependent resistors (VDR), to manipulate the phase of different signals and thereby achieve a real modulating pitch.

For anyone wishing to build a clone of this Magnatone Vibrato circuit, Terry Dobbs (Mr. Valco) has told me he thinks the modern equivalent varisistor for the Magnatone original is Metrosil series # 100-P-W/921. While I cannot confirm the accuracy of this, it might be a good place to begin experimenting. Terry also told me, "legend has it that other old stock subs for the Workman FS1205 are the Zenith 63-5058, Zenith 63-10868, workman #'s FS-308, FR-1039 and FS-1226 I have not personally verified these or the Metrosil's as I still have a couple FS-1205's left in stock." He says his info came from Gary, who used to build Juke Amps.

Hope that info helps someone wishing to clone this extraordinarily great-sounding tube circuit.
