RESCUING STRICKEN TANGMERE! 47802 and 34067 Tangmere Kirkby Stephen and Garsdale 22 September 24 Note I may have used the wrong term for the Piston Rod in the captions. The following is based on information received from impeccable sources. On its southbound run over the Settle Carlisle Line with the Cumbrian Mountain Express Tangmere suffered a serious failure. I'm told the piston rod on the driver's side became detached, with the piston being forced through the head of the cylinder (sorry not my specialist knowledge). Other stories are out there but needless to say the Piston Rod had to be removed! The failure occurred around 5 miles south of Kirkby Stephen. The whole train was pushed forward to Kirkby Stephen by 47802. Tangmere was put into the Up Refuge Siding at Kirkby Stephen alongside the old goods shed. 47802 then pulled the stock from the Up to Down lines using the Kirkby Stephen crossover. The train was taken back to Carlisle with the intention of returning to London via the West coast Main Line. This plan was abandoned . Despite stories to the contrary, there was no sudden stop - passengers were eating lunch and didn't notice any sudden stop. As it was planned to run the whole train back to London via Upperby chord, it suggests limited if any of the stock got flats. A passenger advised that they'd been told the loco (and the first two carriages had wheel flats. Still confused which loco and carriages. Some say you can hear flats on the diesel. The Charter was cancelled at Carlisle with passengers being put on what proved to be the last Avanti service to London. This was due to the train being unable to reach London before emergency engineering possessions kicked it. 86259 Les Ross / Peter Pan was sent from Preston to retrieve the stock to Steamtown. The carriages were returned with a speed limit of 60 mph, 47802 made another run to Kirkby Stephen but returned that evening. WCR had hoped to be able to move Tangmere but the line south on the S&C would be blocked by engineering works. I was not in full understanding of what had gone on when I rushed to catch the 0924 Carlisle - Leeds with the intention of seeing if anything was at Kirkby Stephen. I knew a light engine was scheduled to that station but at the time nothing to suggest which way it would proceed if this was to be the rescue. In the end a train appeared on RealTime Trains from KS to Hellifield and Carnforth just after a southbound service train. That's the background now watch the video!
