The long-nosed potoroo is found on the south-eastern coast of Australia, from Queensland to eastern Victoria and Tasmania, including some of the Bass Strait islands.
The Long-nosed Potoroo is a member of the Rat-Kangaroo family , meaning they are more closely related to Kangaroos and Wallabies than to the Bandicoots they can superficially resemble.
It is only a small marsupial, with a body length between 34 and 38 cm with a long snout and bald tail.

They live in wet and dense  forest as well as coastal heath woodlands but their distribution is fragmented. Predation by foxes, cats and dogs are the major threat to the Long-nosed Potoroo but they also face problems due to land clearing and habitat destruction.

Their diet largely consists of underground fruit and fungi, roots and tubers of plants as well as insects and other soft bodied animals within the soil.

Long-nosed Potoroos are marsupials that can breed throughout the year. The young are highly undeveloped, furless and blind. The live in their mothers’ pouch for approximately 130 days.
