NOTES:
If your backwash valve won't pull up or fails to retract after pulling it up (or is leaking from the top or bottom), here is a simple fix: just swap it out. This works for all major brands, Pentair, Hayward, Jandy & American Products. This will give you at least 5 new years of trouble free operation. Don't waste your time changing the o-rings, changing the part is the best solution. Buy the whole backwash valve, which is cheaper then just the piston by itself.
Brand Info:
The Backwash valve generally will match the filter brand.
Hayward has only one backwash valve (has their logo on it "H")
Pentair now has two backwash valves (one black, older and a newer one with an Almond color outer casing). If your piping for the piston is black order the old black one. If your piping for the piston is almond that is the newer one.
American Products has two different backwash valves. This is one you may need to take in to make sure which one you have.
Jandy has two different backwash valves (One for the older filters and one for the newer ones).
If you are unsure simply pull yours out and take it to your local pool store. They will tell you which one to order. Just make sure your pool is off and won't come back on of course.
