In this video I compare wireless mesh networks to a hardwired approached. The approach I used resulted in 5 POE access points (Netgear Business WAX214) that are wired via ethernet to a POE switch. I also hardwired every device in our house that has an ethernet port (AppleTVs, workstations, printers, gaming consoles, servers, hubs, etc.) This entire setup cost right around $1,000 using my existing router. There is a lot of sweat equity involved and potentially some tools (that I already had) involved with running and fishing the ethernet cable. This entire setup in our home used nearly 1,000 ft. of ethernet cable (fished over the entire length of the house and 3 different levels). So if you are not able or willing to run this cable then a wireless mesh network may be the appropriate route for you. This is probably overkill for many but with so much bandwidth being consumed here and us both working from home I wanted to be certain we have rock-solid reliability moving forward. I also already had the network on a sizable battery backup and utilized that in this system. In the event of a power outage I anticipate to keep network access for at least 3 hours with all network equipment running.
