Jim Lehrer, longtime anchor of the PBS NewsHour, has died at the age of 85. Lehrer co-founded the show that would become the NewsHour with his journalism partner Robert MacNeil following their gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Watergate hearings in 1973. Their approach to reporting the news helped lay the foundation for modern public media reporting. Among Lehrer’s tenets of journalism was to “Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories and clearly label everything.”

“We know that Jim would want us to honor him by continuing to do our work and bringing you this special coverage of this impeachment trial,” said current NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff.

Lehrer, who stepped down as full-time anchor of the NewsHour in 2011, moderated 12 presidential debates in his lifetime, more than any other person in U.S. history. He is survived by his wife, Kate, his three daughters and six grandchildren.
