Visual approach and landing on runway 05 at Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport  (FNC / LPMA) on Madeira Island  in Portugal.  With ATC (air traffic control) audio and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio (starts at 01:37). Cockpit view Airbus A320. Filmed in 4k quality. Produced with 2 cameras.

If you would like to see a video with views of the pilots at work, please check out this video for the same approach: Funchal (FNC) | hazy approach and smo...

The runway at Madeira Island is very special: Originally it was with 1600 meters or 2500 feet very short. 1986 it was extended to 1800 meters (5900 feet). In 2002 it was again extended to todays length of 2780 meters or 9100 feet. Due to missing space at the airport property, the extension was built like a bridge which is supported by 180 concrete columns.

At 03:13 in the video, you can see very good that the right part of the runway looks like a bridge.

Approaches to the island are challenging due to the close terrain in the final turn. Also the wind can be very challenging at Madeira airport. The Portuguese airport authority allows only experienced captains to land at Funchal airport after a special simulator training. After the training, the authority provides an individual certificate. Captains who are scheduled to fly to Madeira have to fly on a regular basis (minimum every 6 months) to the airport or do a minimum of 2 Funchal landings and 2 takeoffs (one on each runway) in adverse weather conditions in an approved simulator to stay current.

At 01:37 the ATIS starts and winds are announced at 02:00 for the threshold of runway 05, 23, the middle of the runway and later in the ATIS for Rosario (at 2:32). Rosario is a point at about one mile left of the approach to runway 05. If you approach runway 05 and the wind readings between Rosario and the threshold are very different, it might get very turbulent on short final and you may expect a windshear. Also winds at the runway reporting points are sometimes very different. This is also be a good indication for a possible windshear near the runway.

Because of the wind situation, the Portuguese airport authority has published a diagram which shows individual wind limits for different wind directions. If the wind is over the limits, planes have to wait for better weather in the holding pattern or fly to nearby Porto Santo island or to an airport on the Canary Islands (about one hour flight time).

This video is for information purposes only. It does not substitute approved flight training. If you need general or type specific flight training, contact a flight school or a certified flight instructor.
