Vector is a DNA molecule used as a vehicle to artificially carry foreign genetic material into another cell, where it can be replicated and/or expressed e.g., Plasmids, Phagemids, Cosmids, BAC, YAC and PAC
A vector containing foreign DNA is termed recombinant DNA
Features of a vector(i) Able to replicate within the host cell(ii) Relatively small  less than 10 kb
Two kinds of DNA molecule that satisfy these criteria in Bacteria are Plasmids and Bacteriophage chromosomes
A small circular DNA strand genetic material present in a cell that can replicate independent of the chromosomes. Plasmids carry one or more genes, responsible for a useful characteristic displayed by the host bacterium Eg., survive in toxic concentrations

A selectable marker is a gene inserted in to the plasmid and introduced into a bacterium or cells, that confers a trait suitable for artificial selection. In the laboratory, antibiotic resistance is often used as a selectable marker
Two types of plasmids: Non integrative plasmids Vs Episomes
Plasmids size: refers the number of nucleotide base pairs of an individual plasmid. 1.0 kb to 250 kb for the largest plasmids
Copy number refers to the number of molecules of an individual plasmid that are normally found in a single bacterial cell.-Stringent plasmids: Present as low copy number-Relaxed plasmids, Multiple copies of More than 50 per cell
