Back in the 1980s, Sega had it's own mascot: Alex Kidd, who starred in 6 games between 1986 and 1990. The problem was that Alex Kidd didn't resonate with fans like Mario did. And with Sega coming out with the Sega Mega Drive and the Sega Genesis (which were directly competing with Nintendo and their Super Nintendo), Sega went about solving this problem by creating someone...or something...to rival the famed Mario.
