I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.

I had previously talked about the time Pepsi used a van halen song for one of their super bowl commercials in the early 90’s. The link is down below to that video. But one of my subscribers who commented on that video suggested doing a story on the band Ween and how they got fired by pizza hut. Let’s explore that story in today’s video.

Ween is a band that’s never shied away from offending people or doing things there own way. In fact this is a band that assembled a very talented group of country musicians in 1995 in Nashville only to record humorous lyrics over the instrumental tracks. The resulting album would be called  12 Golden Country Greats. A number of the session musicians were reportedly so upset, they tried to have their names removed from the credits of the album with songs titled ‘Japanese Cowboy’, ‘and ‘P***Up A Rope’

Fast forward to 2002 and Pizza Hut was trying to promote their new pizza known as the insider, which featured cheese stuffed  crust. Pizza hut  wanted to appear cool and hip so they hired Ween to write some songs for the ad campaign. The story came to light after Ween was fired or let go by the pizza giant and the band wrote an open letter to their fans on their email list revealing the following  “Earlier in 2002 we were hired by the largest advertising firm in the country to write music for a Pizza Hut commercial. Pizza Hut had hired them to come up with a whole new image to promote their new Pizza, “The Insider” which had all the cheese inside the crust.
In keeping in line with their new cutting edge image, the agency hired Ween to do the music, and we delivered in a big way. Unfortunately, they didn’t like a single piece of the 6 tunes we submitted and they had us rewriting the song every day for a couple of weeks before they hired someone else. In my opinion, it is one of the best tunes we wrote all year.” It was around the time of that letter being released to their fans, that the band would put ut two versions of one of the song’s they submitted to pizza hut titled “Where’d the Cheese go.” One was a clean version and one was a dirty version.. According to a 2003 rolling stone article, the clean version of the song was immediately rejected by the advertising agency. And frustrated with the back and forth over the ad campaign the last song Ween sent in was the explicit version of where’d the cheese go with lyrics that included the  line .Bitch where’d the motherfin cheese at? The track soon became a favourite amongst Ween fans and the band performed it live. The AV-CLub and the onion interviewed the members of Ween and asked them about their pizza hut song. The interviewer would ask With regard to "Where'd The Cheese Go?," why would an ad agency that wanted a Ween song pass on that one? to which one of the members replied.
Well, they didn't. They got fired. It wasn't like they judged us and didn't use our music. They had the full concept, and it was very cool and very hip, but the Pizza Hut people fing backed out. So the ad agency got fired, and then consequently we got fired. They were into it all the way. It was all a go, but the Pizza Hut people opted to use the dude with the zoom-in camera on the pizza: That does it for today's video guys thanks for watching.
