Bhavayami raghuramam is a soul-stirring Ragamalika epitomizing the entire story of the epic Ramayanam. This beautiful song, in chaste Sanskrit, was originally composed by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, as a kriti in the single Ragam, Saveri, and set to Rupaka Talam. After more than 100 years, it was recently carved out as a Ragamalika, with built-in chittasvarams by the doyen of Carnatic music, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. This is the version that is currently in vogue. The pallavi and the anupallavi are set in ragam Saveri (which was the original ragam employed by Swathi Thirunal), and there are six charanam segments, sung in ragams nattaiakuranji, dhanysi, mohanam, mukhari, purvikalyani, and appropriately concluding with the mangala ragam, madhyamavati. Each of these six charanams describes one kandam (episode), corresponding to Valmiki's version of Ramayanam.
