Dr Ashok Rajput, a renowned pulmonologist at the CK Birla Hospital, explains how to diagnose this complicated inflammatory disease called sarcoidosis, which affects several organs, including the lungs.
Sarcoidosis is a condition in which granulomas, tiny clusters of inflammatory cells, form in affected tissues. The exact cause of the condition remains unclear, but it is thought to be caused by an abnormal immune reaction triggered by environmental triggers in genetically susceptible patients.
There are several types of sarcoidosis, including pulmonary sarcoidosis, which primarily affects the lungs, and extrapulmonary sarcoidosis, which involves other organs such as the skin, eyes, heart, and nervous system. Symptoms may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, skin rashes, joint pain, and vision problems.
In most cases, sarcoidosis is diagnosed through a combination of a review of the patient’s medical history, a physical exam, an imaging study (e.g., chest X-ray or CT scan) a blood test and in some cases, a tissue biopsy to check for granulomas. Sarcoidosis treatment is focused on relieving symptoms, reducing inflammation, and preventing organ damage. Sarcoidosis often goes away on its own.
However, if treatment is needed, it is usually prescribed corticosteroid medication to reduce inflammation. For more severe cases, or if corticosteroid treatment is not effective or not well tolerated, other immunosuppressant medications may be prescribed.
In this video, Dr Rajput stresses the need for regular monitoring and personalised treatment plans that are tailored to each individual’s needs and disease status.
