Tony Kidd, of KIDD Innovative Design will show how to install a 10/22® style KIDD barrel onto a 10/22® style KIDD receiver.  Tony covers several topics including proper dimensions, timing, avoiding barrel droop, and how to correct or accommodate for improper dimensions.

For more information about avoiding barrel droop see our following blog posted 10/12/14 at:

Proper Dimensions, Timing, and Avoiding Barrel Droop:
The barrel extension must be larger than the receiver hole to ensure a secure fit in this slip-fit or mortensen tenon style attachment.  At KIDD we strive for a 0.0005 resistance fit.  If this proper ratio is in tact you can put some anti seize compound on the barrel extension.  Line the barrel up with the bore of the receiver making sure that the dovetail flat of the barrel is lined up with the bottom of the receiver and start installing the barrel by pushing the barrel into the receiver.  After the barrel is started, we use a rubber mallet and tap on the back of the receiver to gradually insert the entire extension into the receiver.  It is important to note that the shoulder of the barrel must be flush with the receiver.  If the bore and extension are true and the shoulder is flush with the receiver then there will be no barrel droop.  The final barrel timing is completed by clamping the barrel in a vise (using a protective wrap to avoid blemishes) and placing a level across the flat of the dovetail on the barrel and another level across the bottom of the receiver making certain that both are in sync.  If any adjustments are needed at this point, lightly tap the receiver feet to pivot the receiver.  Finally, attach the v-block clamp to secure the installation.  If the ease of this procedure motivates you to purchase a new barrel or receiver for your rifle please follow these links:

Improper Dimensions:
However, in the mix and match world of the 10/22® our customers are not always working with only KIDD products.  So, Tony also covers techniques for dealing with improper dimensions.  When installation doesn't go as described above, finding out what your exact measurements are for your barrel extension and your receiver bore are critical in applying the proper methods for fitment.  When measuring the extension and bore it is important to measure in several places along the length so that you know if your extension tapers toward the breach or shoulder or if your bore does essentially the same thing.  Naturally both should be perfectly straight and true but in our experience we know that this isn't always the case.  Or if the extension is true but too large then trying to correct this inaccuracy can result in tapering due to imbalanced metal removal.  So Tony stresses the importance of measuring especially when the sand paper or file get pulled out of the tool box.

If your barrel extension is just slightly larger than the recommended 0.0005 difference then heating the aluminum receiver is a viable option.  And with heating there is no risk of permanently altering your barrel or receiver.  Placing the receiver in a 250 degree oven for 10 minutes will "grow" the receiver bore 0.001 allowing for a greater ratio disparity between the barrel and receiver.  Again we recommend placing anti seize compound on the barrel before inserting into your hot receiver.  For more information on KIDD products visit us at:
