Project Past History Unscripted Series Fort Matanzas Episode 5 In 1740 the British under the command of governor James Oglethorpe attacked the Spanish held city of St Augustine. Governor Oglethorpe was able to by pass the Castillo De San Marcos (St Augustine’s main line of defense) by sailing south of St Augustine and into the undefended Matanzas inlet. This inlet was considered the back door to St Augustine. Oglethorpe’s siege would last 39 days and end in defeat. Shortly after the siege, The Spanish began construction of a fortification to defend this unguarded approach. In 1742 as Fort Matanzas was nearing completion, the British attempted to sail into the inlet once again. Fort Matanzas would fire its guns at the British ships and they would soon retreat.
