'The Story of My Heart' (TSOMH) - an outstanding, idiosyncratic, unique publication ahead of its time, by Victorian nature journalist and novelist Richard Jefferies. Its published subheading is 'An Autobiography', but it isn't about his life, it's an outline of his original philosophy of life. One suspects the publisher didn't really know what to do with it, and booksellers must have had difficulty deciding how to categorize it. Its initial sales figures were considered a failure.
In some aspects Jefferies comes across in TSOMH like a New Age Prophet, a century before the New Age became a thing. The passion and zeal of his insight seems sharper still, in knowing that he died four years later aged only 38.
Like many others, I came across this obscure little tome by chance, and instantly was arrested both by its themes and the evident natural skill Jefferies had in composing prose with a pleasing rhythm and cadence - the poetic instinct perhaps.
I enjoy sync-ing words with music. With TSOMH it comes easily. I have selected a choice passage from each of the 12 chapters that appeals personally to me. Chapter 9 is the angry chapter, a humanist diatribe, perhaps reflecting the undercurrent of his bothersome infirmity that would in the end prove fatal. So that chapter earns only a line or two tacked onto the chapter 8 selection.
The original book has no chapter titles, only numbers. The headings here are my own creation.
