The valley of the kings contains 63 tombs and chambers that have been discovered so far. Tombs range in size from a small pit to the biggest which contains at least 130 rooms for the sons of Rameses II. The most famous burial discovered was the intact grave of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter. Located close to the New Kingdom power center of Luxor (Thebes). The tomb chambers were excavated and decorated by professional labourers and artisans from Deir el-Medina, a worker’s town situated nearby.
