When testing a dry sprinkler system, a technician will simulate sprinkler head activation by opening an inspector’s test located at the farthest point of the system. Another technician will observe the activation of the valve in the mechanical room. Once the valve is activated the trip timing and pressures are recorded before the valve is closed and drained. The cover plate can then be removed and the interior of the valve inspected. If the clapper and seat are in good condition and free of debris the valve can be reset and depressurized. The fire alarm panel is checked to confirm alarm and supervisory signals were received. Sprinkler heads and piping are visually inspected condition, correct orientation, type and installation. While testing a wet sprinkler system the control valve is closed causing a supervisory signal which is confirmed by a technician at the fire panel. Once received the test valve is returned to normal and the test drain is opened to flow water simulating the activation of a sprinkler head. The technician observes the flow pressure and times the simulation until the alarm signal is received at the fire panel. Operation and timing is recorded on the inspection report.
