Is Diaphragmatic Breathing the Best Breathing Technique for Singing? | Voice Building Junkies Ep015

What is the best breathing technique for singing? Is it diaphragmatic breathing? We hear this all the time, yet actually, there's a better technique. It's called "costal-diaphragmatic breathing".
You might think that they're the same and one is just an abbreviation for the other. This isn't fully true. There is a way to breathe for singing that is called "diaphragmatic" and another way that used the expander muscles of the rib cage, called the external intercostal muscles.
When you combine the use of both the diaphragm and costal muscles on the inhale, you get the best rib cage expansion, the fullest breath, and, more importantly, you create the greatest potential for passive exhale.
It is the expansion of the rib cage that sets you up for true Italian appoggio breathing for singing. Don't worry about the fancy Italian words. Don't think that this is for opera and classical only. It's for any kind of singing that needs to be big and beautiful and smooth. It's for strong high notes. I explain more in the video.
