"Es quillt und keimt von unten auf" (It Swells and Sprouts from Below), known more commonly as "Das Proletariat" (The Proletariat), is a German revolutionary song written by Johann Christian Lüchow in 1848, during the Springtime of Nations. In 1973, it was adapted to music and sung by the West German writer and political activist Dieter Süverkrüp.
Es quillt und keimt von unten auf,
Wie frisch gesäte Saat;
Es wächst wohl aus der Erd' heraus:
Das Proletariat!
Es ist erwacht der vierte Stand,
Der nützlichste im Staat;
Denn wer ernährt das ganze Land?
Das Proletariat!
Es schindet sich nur für den Sarg —
O Schande, Volksverrat!
Es zehrt von seinem Lebensmark:
Das Proletariat!
Die ihr auf weichen Kissen ruht,
Im Überfluß und Staat,
Denkt, wenn ihr satt und wohlgemut,
Ans Proletariat!
Was nutzt noch hohler Phrasen Schwall?
