Shinsengumi was a Shogun police force in Kyoto in the mid-1860s who kept the peace through the use of their swords. Kyoto was a hotbed of insurrection of Imperial loyalists who wanted the Shogunate overthrown and power restored to the Emperor.

Serizawa Kamo was the first leader of Shinsengumi. He was a samurai by birth unlike many of the others in the group but he was reckless and violent. His actions damaged the corps' reputation. One rainy night in the fall of 1863 he was killed by assassins who are believed to have been fellow Shinsengumi sent by the Vice Commander Kondo Isami who assumed full command following Serizawa's death.

This re-enactment took place at a Shinsengumi Festival in Itabashi where Kondo Isami is buried.
