Have you ever wondered if the Bald Eagle you are looking at is male or female? Visually, they look identical, but as with most raptors, the female is larger (heavier and bigger) than the male. Sometimes this is clearly visible in a pair, when you see both together at the nest, but there is not always a definite, clear separation of the sexes based upon size and weight. For example, the largest northern male eagle may be as big as or even bigger than the smallest southern female. The only 100% accurate way to tell the difference between the two would be a surgical examination or DNA testing.
