Stories Behind the Stones - Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouth Port

Stories Behind the Stones, presented by the Friends of the Ancient Cemetery and the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth is sponsored by a grant from the Mass Humanities Bridge Street Fund. Hear from members of the Friends of the Ancient Cemetery in Yarmouth Port as they discuss the work and research that has been done to preserve the history at the oldest burial site in the Town of Yarmouth. The first of our stories behind the stones is by longtime volunteer Ruth Weissberger who cleaned three very special Wilder stones to uncover a hidden prize. The second presentation by Judi Trainor chronicles the perils of going to sea and shows us the final resting places of Yarmouth seafarers Kelly Morton learned new skills, met new friends, and introduced Mikey the dog to the stories behind the stones she cared for in the Howland family lot. Sandwiched between stark dates of birth and death, Laurel Gabel tells the many small stories of a Yarmouth Port family brought to life in the diaries of Lizzie Ryder Taylor. And finally, don’t miss Melanie Barron’s recounting of the color legend of a ship, a pirate, and the myth of Maria Hallet - a mystery for you to solve.
