Q: Why can't I leave comments?

... is the one for comments.  The others are alternate versions (musanim channel); version two is the latest remake of the original (with corrections, see below) ...

... and version three is a more conventional piano-roll style presentation ...

Q: What do the shapes mean?
A: In the third ("piano roll") version of the video the shapes are assigned like this ...
rectangle: brass, tubular bells, timpani
octagon: strong gusts, monster chords, whipping wind, last chord, brass
ellipse: cymbal, bass drum, piccolo, flute
rhombus: strings
inverted ellipse: oboe, bassoon
triangle: clarinet
A: In versions other than the "piano roll" one, it's more complicated.  The sustained notes form the background, which is done with a Voronoi tessellation (see  http://www.musanim.com/Voronoi/ ).  What I call the "monster chords" are done in big octagons (which look like rectangles most of the time).  The "wind" is done with little circles that fly in from the sides.  "Strong gusts" are the big ellipses.  The flutes and clarinets have solos at the end; these are done with VRingAlpha (see http://www.musanim.com/renderers/ for a list of renderer types).  When notes appear in contexts other than that, they are shaped according to instrument:
ellipse: flute, piccolo, cymbal
inverted ellipse: pizzicato strings, harp, oboe, bassoon
rhombus: arco strings
rectangle: brass
octagon: clarinet
When the instruments are playing one of the "fanfare" themes, they use the "Sigmoid" scrolling method (see http://www.musanim.com/scrolling/ for description of scrolling methods).

Q: What do the colors mean?
A: Colors are assigned according to pitch, in a system I call "harmonic coloring" (since it shows changes in harmonies).  You can read more about this here:
http://www.musanim.com/HarmonicColoring/
In the first version of this video, blue is assigned to the D.  In the second version, blue is assigned to the pitch at the center of the circle of fifths of the pitches indicated by the key signature (so, for D minor, with pitches Bb/F/C/G/D/A/E, blue is G).  In the third ("piano roll") version, blue is assigned to D.

Q: I thought you didn't like Mussorgsky's music.
A: Yes, Mussorgsky is on the list of "I'll probably never do a video of ..." composers (see http://www.musanim.com/requests/ for a discussion of this).  However, a couple of factors came together.  I don't pay any attention to suggestions from my viewers, but when I talk to music teachers about how they use my animated graphical scores in their classes, I often remember to ask whether there are pieces they would use if I made scores for them, and this piece has come up a few times over the years.  The second factor was that I found this public domain recording on Musopen.  My opinion of Mussorgsky's music has changed as a result of a closer study of this piece, but overall it hasn't improved.  I admire his imagination and creativity, but my reaction after getting more familiar with this piece is the opposite of what somebody said about Wagner's music (that it was "better than it sounds").

Q: Is something wrong at __:__?
A: There were some mistakes in the score I used, and I added some of my own.  In the first version I found these ...
2:58 wrong notes in clarinet part
4:30 missing notes
4:33 bassoon notes are not grouped with "monster cords"
6:17 missing grace notes
7:23 fake music (that disappears before it's played) is incorrectly aligned
10:21 wrong note in clarinet solo
(throughout) timpani missing (this was intentional, but I've decided it should be there)
... and fixed them in the second version. Also, for people who want to use the score for study purposes, I made a third version with a more conventional piano-roll score (with measure numbers).
