One of the things people don’t really talk about when it comes to signing your work is what do you sign it with.  For obvious reasons it depends on what medium your artwork is made out of but I’ve listed below the best materials to use for the main different art mediums.

The general rule of thumb is to use whatever medium you used to create the artwork.

Canvas (Front): Acrylic paint, oil paint, or permanent markers. (You can use oil paint over acrylic not the other way around).
Canvas (Back): acid-free/archival permanent markers or pencil.
Paper : Pencil, archival pen, or ink.
Wood: Wood burner, paint, pencil, or archival permanent markers.
Metal: Engraving tools, paint, or archival permanent markers.

To sign the back of a canvas use an archival-quality pen or marker labeled "archival" or "acid-free". Pigment-based pens or markers designed for artwork, such as Micron pens or Staedtler pigment liners, are good choices.  These pens use archival-quality ink that is fade-resistant, waterproof, and less likely to bleed through the canvas over time.

If you go to a gallery or art museum and look at the prints; virtually all will be signed in pencil. It's the most archival writing instrument because unlike all forms of ink, pencil will never, ever fade. The graphite will literally outlast the paper itself. Also unlike many inks, pencil will not damage the paper because it has no chemicals in it acid or otherwise. It will smudge if rubbed, but if you make sure it is carefully stored it should be fine!
