Today I want to show you one of the symbols of Bulgaria in a detail with which you probably have not seen them until now - These are the seven Rila lakes in all their beauty.

The seven Rila lakes are located on the northwestern slope of the mountain, and to visit them in Google Maps, enter the Panichishte lift destination. Climbing the ropeway you will reach the Rila Lakes Hut, from where the tourist routes depart. If you have the desire and, above all, physical fitness, you can go up the pedestrian route that is under the lift. No matter how you get to the top - be prepared to walk, we are currently at 2100 meters above sea level and you have 2535 to go. Take a full day and come in the morning if you want to see all the lakes. The tour around them is 8 kilometers and takes about 5 hours.

Let me test you, which of you knows the names of all seven lakes. Say them in your head, I will now show them to you visually. The bottom one is the bottom lake, well thought out, right? It collects the water from the other 6 and gives rise to the German River. Next is the Fish, which has fish in it and is the shallowest. The hut is located next to it. The third is the Shamrock, simply because it is shaped like a three-leaf clover. Next comes the twin, which has the largest area and consists of two parts connected by a narrow strait. The fifth is called the Kidney, I won't tell you why, it's obvious. The sixth is the Eye, or as some call it the heart, it is the deepest of all - as much as 37.5 meters, the size of an 8-story building. At the top, at 2535 meters above sea level, is Salzata. The name comes not only from its shape, but also from the crystal clear waters.

We start our journey today on the most popular route - from the Rilski Ezera hut through the dry hill with a slight ascent and so within 30-40 minutes I hope we will reach Babreka. Our final destination is the highest lake - the teardrop. We then descend to the Kidney again, but detour to visit the others as well. I guess it won't be easy for us with so much equipment, but we will do our best.

The Rila lakes are located in steps and are connected to each other by small streams, with the upper ones flowing separately to Bliznaka, and then downwards, the water passes successively through the others. It is along these streams that small but beautiful waterfalls can be observed.

One of the most famous and familiar to all lakes is the kidney. It is surrounded by meadows and is the first stop for families who want to have a picnic and relax. It is often even the final destination for people who decide to visit the lakes, because after that is the harder climb. Now here you may find it strange why there is a gravel path, even 2 years ago there was a scandal about it. The answer is to protect the trails from erosion, understandably to absorb some money. I understand that conservation is a good thing, it's not done that way. Firstly, it doesn't do any work and secondly, it only threatens the untouched nature. It's good that they realized and the ministry stopped the excavator at the 50th meter, that otherwise all the paths would have been sprinkled. If you're going to conserve like that, that's where I think a great Aleppo-style retaining wall could be built.
