'읽씹/안읽씹' literally means '읽고 씹다(read and chew)/안읽고 씹다(don't read and chew)'. Both imply not responding to a message. In South Korea, people differentiate between whether the message was read and ghosted or simply ghosted without being read. Although both actions entail ignoring, '안읽씹' leaves a slight possibility that the message wasn't read due to potential unforeseen circumstances!
Koreans use a messenger called 'KakaoTalk'. Instead of 'unread,' KakaoTalk displays the number of people who haven't read the message. Therefore, the expression for reading a message is sometimes referred to as 'the 1 disappeared!' Whether the 1 remains or disappears, having someone ignore your message can be heart-wrenching.
