Tyāgarāja's quintessential philosophy on emancipation.

Saint Tyāgarāja who aspired so fervently to reach the supreme, nādayóga was even more complex and demanding than other yógās, both in strict technicalities of performance and in the esoteric quality of conceptualisation and philosophy.

In Tyāgarāja’s view the musical knowledge would seem to be sine-qua- non for liberation.

He composed several kritis to highlight this wisdom and one such beautiful song is “Mókshamu galadā bhuviló jeevanmuktulu gāni” in the rāga Sāramathi which is believed to have been created by Saint himself. Sāramathi rāga is a derivative of Natabhairavi and an excellent vehicle in carrying the message driven in this composition.

In this composition, the saint asks if there can be liberation for those who have not known release, those who have neither true devotion nor musical wisdom. He explains that through the combination of the life force or vital breath (prāña) and fire (anala) the vibration of Om manifests in the form of seven tones of music, an idea stated in Sangeetha Rathanākara. Then he asks: “For those who have not experienced the consciousness of Shiva Dakshināmūrthi, the teacher who taught by wordless silence and who is fond of playing the Veena, can there be liberation – for those who have not already known the release? In this discipline of divinely entrancing vibrations, Tyāgarāja offered an inlet to this way of freedom.

Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879 – 1950), who revealed the direct path of practice of Self-enquiry and awakened mankind to the immense spiritual power of the holy Arunachala Hill said, “Liberation is not the release from bondage; liberation is knowledge that there is no bondage at all.”

Echoing the message portrayed in this immortal composition, Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK), in his inimitable style and scholarship renders this composition to enable the listeners to grasp Tyāgarāja’s intent and its nuances.

This recording is an excerpt from a live concert held in Feasterville, PA, USA on 22 September 1990. Sri Purnachander and Sri. M L N Raju are the accompanying artistes.
