US judge: transfer of settlement to Marcos martial law victims despite SolGen's objections | ANC

Early Edition: A federal judge in the US on Tuesday approved the transfer of settlement proceeds to human rights victims of the late President Ferdinand Marcos' martial law regime despite objections by the Philippine government.

Solicitor General Jose Calida had called the settlement deal grossly disadvantageous to the government and not in accord with existing Philippine laws and jurisprudence. But the New York judge handling the case ruled they had actual and apparent authority to bind the Philippines to the settlement.
