Hi Guys! I am still mulling over Bhansali’s Heeramandi!

The series dropped in May 2024, on Netflix and it was HIGHLY anticipated.  There is so much to unpack and discuss – so I decided to do a full recap and analysis of every episode. This is my recap and analysis of episode 1: Mallika Jaan, The Queen of Heermandi.

In this analysis, I discuss various books and articles that I have read concerning Tawaif history and where I think the first episode fell flat. I also include an in-depth analysis of Bibbojaan’s viral walk and what Aditi Rao Hydari has shared regarding creating the scene. Also, if you enjoyed this video, you may also enjoy these videos related to this topic:

I also refer to this YouTube interview by the Quint with Kathak dancer and the founder of “The Courtesan Project” Manjari Chaturvedi – watch it here:

I find Tawaifs such a fascinating – yet forgotten - part of South Asian history and I hope to unpack more on these interesting women as we go along in my recap and analysis of every episode. Let me know what you thought of Heermandi as a series, and your thoughts on episode 1 – hope you enjoy the video!
