Visit Astoria, Oregon, the Little San Francisco of the Northwest.

Astoria was founded in 1811,  and is the oldest city in the state of Oregon, and was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.  Astoria is steeped in history.

Astoria is an official Coast Guard city and is located near the mouth of the Columbia River, which is a major shipping channel.  Here you will find an eclectic mixture of fishermen, entrepreneurs, gourmet chefs, hipsters, maritime workers, artists, brewmasters, loggers, and descendants of its original Nordic settlers,

This video provides a glimpse of many of the interesting sites to see in this scenic, historic town.  The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a world class museum, with lots of local history, including a tour of the lightship Columbia.  The Barbey Maritime Center was once the Astoria train depot.  Also nearby is the Heritage Museum which showcases regional history in a classic 1904 building.  And don't forget to stop at the Bowpicker - known for its renowned fish & chips.

Pier 39 contains Astoria's oldest and largest waterfront building and used to be the home of the Bumble Bee fish cannery.  Today it hosts a cannery museum, the original Coffee Girls cannery coffee shop, a Rogue Ale Public House, Astoria Scuba, Fisherman's Suites and other businesses.  Nearby you can also visit the sea lions who've camped on the docks at the East Mooring Basin.

Mill Pond Village was built on what was once a large, 16 acre lumber mill site.  It is situated around the original mill's log pond.  Nearby, jutting into the Columbia River, is the iconic "BIg Red" building - one of the most photographed buildings in the NW.

Among the many interesting buildings in downtown Astoria are the Flavel Museum, the Columbia House, Buoy Beer, and many quaint shops, gourmet restaurants, brew pubs, food trucks, and scenic views everywhere.

The Astoria-Megler bridge is a stunning sight, with its over 4 mile long span crossing the busy Columbia River.  Completed in 1966, it is the the longest continuous truss bridge in North America.  Near the bridge is the Cannery Pier Hotel and the West Mooring Basin.

And no trip to Astoria is complete without a trip to the Astoria Column, built on the highest point in Astoria.  Here you can get a panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.
