Metropolitan Railway E Class No: 1  whistles and arrives at Moorgate entering one of the 2 bays at Moorgate used by Circle Line, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Line services. As you can see Moorgate-Met is underground but, up-top it was a clear, very cold early Winter evening. No: 1 was hauling its 2nd run of this special day marking the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the London Underground. Moorgate is not on that 150 year old section as the original line ran from Bishop's Road (now Paddington-Hammersmith & City) to Farringdon. The 1st run was this morning when No: 1 ran VIP's from Kensington-Olympia to Moorgate. This 2nd run was the 1st to have paying customers and completed the same run as this morning. It's Sunday 13th January 2013 and the time was 19:47. The modern train in Platform 3 is an example of the Class S7. An S7 is almost identical to the Metropolitan S8 except one carriage shorter and the seating layout is different. The unit was in a special 150 anniversary livery and was open for the public to visit.

I was on Platform 5 witnessing the arrival with a happy and cheerful crowd of lucky punters who, like me, had got tickets for a historic trip to Edgware Road and back. No: 1 makes a good sound as it comes into Moorgate as there is a slight grade up from Barbican. You can see the lovingly and beautifully restored Metropolitan Railway coaches and at the back a preserved 1920's Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive that we train-spotters called "buggies". This loco has a name and its Sarah Siddons. Sarah Siddons was a famous 19th Century actress whose most famous role was that of Lady Macbeth. Happily we had no Shakespearean tragedy and Sarah performed her role well.

Sarah Siddons hauled our train to Edgware Road and No: 1 took it back to Moorgate. Next week No:1 will haul the westbound trains.

Normal services at Moorgate-Met are Circle Line trains from Edgware Road to Hammersmith via Aldgate and return, Hammersmith & City trains from Hammersmith to Barking and return and Metropolitan Line trains between Aldgate and Watford, Uxbridge, Chesham and Amersham. The Class S7' will this year take over from C stock the Hammersmith & City and Circle Line services.

The Metropolitan Railway opened the line from Farringdon to Moorgate (Moorgate Street was the original name) on 23rd December 1865, nearly 3 years after the Metropolitan Railway to Farringdon opened.

Hope you enjoy and please give me your feedback. This is my 2nd film of 2013. Hope to film Clan Line on the Southern main-line on Friday.
