Before Central Park was built, about 1600 people lived on the land. Many of them were residents of Seneca Village.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, Central Park influenced the development of urban parks nationwide and is widely regarded a masterpiece of landscape architecture.
The park first opened for public use in the winter of 1859 when thousands of New Yorkers skated on lakes constructed on the site of former swamps.

The magic of Central Park comes from the ingenuity of its construction, which required a massive amount of gunpowder, some 20,000 workers, 10 years to complete with the cost of ten million dollars.
It was once filled with mud, swamps, and rocks..Trees and plants couldn’t grow, so topsoil had to be imported from New Jersey and dumped onto the grounds.
The Park contains seven man-made lakes and ponds, has over 9,000 benches, 51 sculptures, 36 bridges & arches, and 132 fountains.
