AUTHORS! Don't Quit Your Day Job! (but who CAN quit their day job?)

It's such an awful cliche, isn't it? Author gets book deal, author quits job in a blaze of glory. Except... that almost never happens?

Most writers cannot live off book money and, thus, cannot quit their day jobs. Womp womp. But who can "quit their day job" and live off of writing novels? I'm talking about that today!

Disclaimer: as always, I am talking primarily about traditional publishing, which is my area of expertise.

I'll also talk anecdotally about how high your advance will need to be for you to quit your day job and write full time. Single people in expensive cities, I have bad news... :P
