Here is a real holiday throwback! Creamed pearl onions! This has got to be one of my Thanksgiving favorites that I look forward to each year! My friend Heather from The Kneady Homesteader channel here on YouTube said that she had never heard of this dish and asked me to make a video. So here it is!
Creamy white sauce seasoned with salt, pepper and a touch of nutmeg along with pearl onions. I made this quick and easy for this video and only simmered them a bit on the stove, however I usually put them in a buttered pie dish and bake them with a bit of Parmesan cheese on top until they are golden brown and bubbly. This is truly a dish full of heaven if you are an onion lover!
I also use frozen pearl onions because, have you ever tried to peel pearl onions? You have to boil them, cool them and then slip them out of their skins. Big pain! This is much easier and faster!
Make enough to have for your meal and maybe just a bit for leftovers. Don't freeze and don't make ahead. This is a dish best made fresh, like most dishes for the holidays. There is no substitute for a fresh side dish like this creamy delight!
You can also add sauteed mushrooms to the dish or even some petite peas if you like. Traditionally, my grandmother would serve it with peas, but I hate peas, so they are never on my table!
