There are four degrees of hearing loss: mild, moderate, severe or profound. Dr. Peter Volsky, Otolaryngologist with Baptist Health South Florida, explains these names are used to provide clear distinctions for measured hearing levels. The specialist states symptoms that affect people with hearing loss have to do with communication. When someone is in the moderate range of the hearing testing, he benefits from amplification or a hearing aid to communicate better. In cases of severe or profound hearing loss, people really need a hearing aid to communicate, the doctor says. According to the expert, the voice volume is not something that physicians measure when they’re looking at assessing someone’s hearing level.
