Graham Holton’s presentation will emphasise the importance of Y-DNA SNP testing as an essential follow up to STR testing. Following a look at the limitations of STR testing, the presentation will consider the various types of SNP tests available, how to decide on what testing to do, including the importance of DNA projects in this process, and the dating of new SNPs. These points will be illustrated by examples and there will also be some thoughts on the future place of SNP testing in Y-DNA research.

Graham Holton began teaching family history as a tutor of evening classes at the University of Strathclyde and has been a tutor on the university’s postgraduate programme in Genealogical Studies since it commenced in 2007. He is the author of Discover your Scottish Ancestry (2nd ed. 2009) and is currently editing a new book on genetic genealogy to be published by Pen & Sword. Having led the Battle of Bannockburn Family History Project, with a focus on tracing early descents using documentary and genetic evidence, the similar Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project has now commenced, with results due in 2020.

This lecture was presented at Family Tree Live (FTL), London, 26-27 April 2019. Please note that these FTL videos are copyrighted to the presenter and should only be used for personal study. The FTL lectures were sponsored by FamilyTreeDNA (at www.ftdna.com) and organised by Debbie Kennett, a volunteer from ISOGG (International Society of Genetic Genealogy at www.isogg.org). ISOGG volunteers provided free DNA advice and support for members of the public at the conference.
