Reading Genesis Again--for the First Time!

The book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament) is certainly one of the most influential books in the history of the Western world--alongside New Testament books like Romans and the Gospel of John. Its rich story-telling, drawn from a dozen ancient sources, with a final creative editor attempting to forge it into a whole, lies at the core of our common Western culture.

But how does one read it? From the Geneva Bible to the King James to the latest "Revised" New Revised Standard, or the latest Jewish Publication Society--traditional translations, familiar but often less than accurate, are what we have. Fox, Alter, Friedman, and a host of Rabbinic translators have made worthy attempts to offer fresh translations.

In this extended interview with Jacob Berman (‪@History-Valley‬ ) I talk about my new translation of the book of Genesis and how it changes so many assumptions people make about this culturally foundational book.
