Since 2018 the Department of Conservation has worked in partnership with Environment Canterbury, Te Uru Rākau’s One Billion Trees Programme and Jobs for Nature to restore Te Waihora’s wetland margins.

This landscape scale restoration has achieved 350,000 trees planted, 1,000 + hectares of active ecological weed control and 350 hectares of habitat protected with predator control.

The restoration programme is paving the way for our vision of rejuvenating the mauri and ecosystem health of Te Waihora. It has created a legacy that will lay the foundation for continued collaboration in enhancing and protecting the indigenous biodiversity of the wider Te Waihora catchment.
