In this video, we delve into the specifics of installing a HF antenna mount on a Subaru Outback. Our focus is on the use of a 3/8 mount suitable for HF antennas, including options like the Diamond HF20CL and the Tarheel Antenna, specifically the Little Tarheel II model. One of the key challenges I address is the incompatibility of the Diamond K400 mount with the Subaru Outback's hatchback design. The issue lies in its inability to fit between the lift gate and the bumper. To navigate this, I demonstrate how I adapted the Comet RS730 car mount – a product sold without coax or an antenna holder – to suit this specific vehicle model. In an effort to be cost-effective, I repurposed the coax and antenna holder from a previously used Diamond K400, integrating them into the Comet RS730 mount. Another significant point I cover is the electrical limitation of the Comet RS730 mount. This mount fails to conduct power effectively from its screws to the ground of the coax, presenting a notable flaw. This shortcoming disrupts the connection of the groundplane to the coax and consequently to the radio. This results in subpar SWR rates and leads to inefficient antenna resonance, a critical aspect for effective ham radio operation. Additionally, I will guide viewers through the process of removing the car trim, which might appear daunting at first. However, with the tips and techniques I share, this task becomes more approachable and manageable, even for those new to such DIY tasks. Throughout the video, I aim to provide valuable insights and practical advice for ham radio enthusiasts. These tips are geared towards optimizing antenna setups on vehicles, specifically tailored for models like the Subaru Outback. This video is a comprehensive guide for anyone looking to enhance their mobile ham radio experience.
