This skip counting by 10s song gives children an introduction to skip counting and to their 10 times tables. Skip counting helps kids come to grips with the concept of multiplication and kickstarts the process of memorization of, in this case, their 10 times tables.
This counting video is suitable for children of all ages but is especially aimed at children in first grade through third grade. The beat starts slowly as we count by 10 to 100 and it then gets faster and faster. This is done to increase children's number familiarity and help them develop an instant recall of the numbers involved in skip counting by ten.
In many countries, the ten times table -- along with the twos and the fives -- is one of the first multiplication tables taught. This makes sense, because it is very simple -- and once children realize they merely need to add a zero to the end of the number to work out the answer, they should find multiplying by ten easy.
But the simplicity of the tens times table should not mask its importance. Our number system is based on the number ten and the ability to easily mentally multiply or divide by ten is one of the hallmarks of numerical proficiency.
The images presented change with each verse of the song:
- The first time we count by 10 to 100 and each numeral comes on screen as it is said.
- Next, the written words for each number appear, ie ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and a hundred. Some children struggle with numbers as words so the sooner they become familiar with the words and their spelling, the better -- especially given that many mathematical problems are presented as number sentences.
- Over the next three verses the words appear again in a different format and then the numerals in two different formats.
- For the final verse, the music reverts to its original slower speed and the numerals are displayed as in the first verse.
We also hope you and your child have fun trying to keep up with the music as it gets faster and faster! As always, make sure that you find ways to make your child's learning experience fun and rewarding. Even if you don't like math yourself, do not let this show through when helping your kids!
