Dogs 101 - MINIATURE SCHNAUZER - Top Dog Facts About the MINIATURE SCHNAUZER Check out More at BrooklynsCorner.com The Miniature Schnauzer is a member of the Schnauzer type of dogs and, as the name suggests, is a smaller form of the Standard Schnauzer. The Standard variety was developed in Germany in the 19th century for hunting, herding and guarding on farms. With time, the farmers developed a more compact version – the Miniature Schnauzer – by crossing with Affenpinschers and Miniature Poodles. By the turn of the 20th century, the Miniature was being considered a breed distinct from the Standard. The American Kennel Club places it in the ‘terrier’ group of dogs, unlike the other Schnauzers. The breed came to the US well after its larger cousins, but soon became more popular both as a family pet as well as a show dog. Time for some Ruff Trivia: - The Miniature Schnauzer was typically skilled at hunting which of these? o A: Vermin o B: Water fowl o C: Foxes What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video. Adult Miniature Schnauzers have a height of 12 to 14 inches and weigh between 13 to 15 pounds. The dog has a square built, rectangular head and straight, rigid front legs. Bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows; teeth that meet in a ‘scissor bite’ and V-shaped, forward-folding ears are other characteristic physical traits. Its feet have thick, black pads and are often called ‘cat-like’. A soft undercoat and a wiry exterior fur make up its double coat. Black, salt and pepper, black and silver, and pure white are the common coat colors. Grooming: Despite being a furry breed, shedding is minimal in case of Miniature Schnauzers, making a twice-a-week brushing schedule generally enough. Regular trimming of hair for pets and more involved stripping for show dogs is needed to keep the dog looking tidy. Nail clipping, teeth brushing and ear cleaning have to be regular too. Temperament: One of the qualities that have kept the Miniature Schnauzer a family favorite for decades is its temperament, which can be described as neither aggressive nor timid. It is an alert, playful and outgoing dog that gets along well with kids and other dogs. Generally aloof with strangers, it can become friendly once introduced properly. Despite being bred on farms, its size makes it well suited for life in apartments. Training: The Miniature Schnauzer is a very intelligent dog, often seen in trials that test agility, obedience and tracking. Its drive to hunt small animals needs to be controlled through early training if made to live with cats or other small pets. It enjoys vigorous play and running around in open farm-like spaces, but a moderate to long walk on leash or a good play in the yard can take care of its daily exercise needs. Health: The life expectancy of the Miniature Schnauzer is 12 to 14 years. It is a generally healthy breed, with some typical problems seen being diabetes, pancreatitis, eye-related issues, von Willebrand disease and dermatitis. Feeding the dog a non-fatty diet can prevent some of these. The smart and spunky Miniature Schnauzer is perfect for apartments or suburban homes. Easy to train, this house guard loves to join its family in all their activities, whether it's a game in the yard or lounging in the living room.
