I am a seventh-generation dairy farmer from County Westmeath, Ireland. I began farming in 1970's and have modernized the family farm over the years, continuing a legacy dating back to my great-grandfather.
Farm Modernization: I worked together with my father to modernize the farm from its mid-20th-century operations. This included expanding fields, building silage pits, and upgrading facilities, despite some father-son disagreements over the pace and cost of these changes.
Challenges of Succession: The primary challenge discussed is the succession of the family farm. I highlight the complexity and importance of transferring the farm to the next generation, ensuring the interests of all family members are protected and the farm remains viable.
Personal Experience with Succession: I have been involved in farming politics and learned extensively about succession planning. I recently transferred Ashlawn farm to my son Kenneth and his wife, gaining further insights into the legal and practical aspects of this process.
Advice on Succession: I advise farmers on various ways to handle farm succession, emphasizing the importance of making clear arrangements to avoid complications. I'm stressing the need for planning, whether through direct transfer, leasing, or selling, to ensure a smooth transition and avoid family disputes.
