Considered the largest carnival in the world, Rio de Janeiro's Carnival draws two million visitors each day to its streets and takes place each year before to Lent. The year 1723 saw the inaugural Carnival celebration in Rio. When the Brazilians were enslaved, the Africans taught them the samba's throbbing rhythms. No one is more musically skilled than them. Afro-Brazilians brought the samba—a unique blend of song, dance, and music—to the destitute slums around Rio de Janeiro following the abolition of slavery in 1888. 1917 saw the samba's integration into the Rio Carnival as a fundamental component.
