Join my son and I on a catch and cook for squirrel in Southern Ontario. At the end, I will share my thoughts on "modern masculinity," and the importance of time spend in the woods pursuing game and fish! Please feel free to add your thoughts below.

"Black squirrels are actually grey squirrels, but they’re considered a significant enough variation to have their own name: melanized grey squirrels. Black squirrels are most common in the northern parts of their range, throughout eastern and central Canada. Why the black fur? While no one knows for sure, in the 1970s scientists were able to show that black squirrels conserved significantly more heat in the wintertime than grey squirrels did."
The last part of the video will include a trail-side chat discussing 'modern masculinity' and what it means to be a man in an increasingly domestic feminine-centric world. I will talk about how young boys are vilified for being completely normal, and how school teachers dissuade them from fun imaginary play that is healthy for their development - like drawing tanks (a real experience my son recounted to me).
We also dig into some corn gruel by mortar and pestle as well as some zucchini from the garden drenched in butter and maple sugar harvested from the property. To start it all off is a friction fire with the bow drill.
Later l share a reader comment, from a young man who, rather than make an ill informed criticism (which is normally the case for young men who don't go outdoors), asked a simple question; 'how does one go from a privileged life into the woods doing the sorts of stuff that we do.'
Part of being a father is raising my son in a way that will produce the kinds of results he desires in his life. Being outdoors and pursuing game is one of the most effective ways to produce strong, intelligent, and capable young men who will excel in life. Rather than run away from problems, nature teaches patience and diligence. No temper tantrum will solve a problem in nature, only hard work and tenacity will produce success.
Taking game, starting fires and cooking, all require problem solving in a complex non-linear world - the kind of world that boy's brains were created to effectively control!
It's not okay to just let kids be left alone, as often this amounts to the easy way out t- more screen time.
It's so important that our young boys spend time around strong masculine figures - men. It is by being with men, that boys will become men themselves.
TO THE VIEWER, squirrel is both plentiful and in need of control. In Canada, squirrel is taken under a simple small games license. In order to manage wild populations, it is important as the top predator to keep numbers of any wild animal below the carrying capacity. This avoids the spread of disease and habitat destruction. Populations that reach too high a concentration can lead to potential catastrophic boom and bust cycles that can harm the entire population. Having a strong predator in the food chain ensures that the entire species is more successful in the long term.
