Nikon d7200 vs Canon 80d

BUILD QUALITY

To start off this review, let’s first take a look at the build quality of these two cameras

Now from afar theres not really a huge difference in terms of the size of the bodies of both of these cameras, but when you pick them up it’s a little bit different.

In your hand, the nikon d7200 does feel quite a lot larger than the smaller canon 80d. Now I never really though of the canon 80d as being a small camera, especially compared to the smaller rebel models, but it does feel it when compared to the nikon.

And that’s a bad thing for either of these cameras. They both feel very solid in hand and are definitely quite a big step up from each brands more entry level cameras.

They both weigh around the same anyway so the difference is pretty small.

All of the buttons are quite similar and where you would expect them, although I did find that we do have a few more buttons on the 80d up near the shutter, which is something that i like.

Both cameras have all some weather resistance which is good to see, and should be fine in anything other than pouring down rain.

LCD SCREEN

So let’s turn these cameras around now and talk about their screens.

And the first thing you’ll notice is that the Canon 80d has a fully articulating screen whereas the nikon doesn’t.

And to me, thart’s a bit of a pity. Now a few years ago I wouldn’t really have cared whetehr or not a camera had articulating screen, but since i’ve used them now, i really do enjoy them.

Being able to have your camera up high or down and still be able to compose your shot well is a nice thing. And if you do any video works it’s just great to be able to move it around. If you ever film yourself like I do, it’s an absolute must.

But to be fair the nikon, I actually have been incredibly impressed with the quality of the screen. Now I can’t really fault the 80d’s screen, it’s really nice and vibrant, but there’s something about the d7200’s screen which is just so clear. It’s also a little bit bigger than the Canon’s screen.

Even in bright day light it’s very impressive so good job with that nikon.

TOP LCD

Now both of these cameras have top lcd screens which are nice to see.

There’s not a huge difference between the two screens, although I did find that the Canon 80d did manage to add in just a little bit more information, while the nikon did have larger text.

TOUCH SCREENS

Now i just want to go back to the lcd screens again, and talk about something I didn’t mention before and that’s that the Canon 80d does in fact have a touch screen.

Now this might seem like a gimmick to some, but having the ability to quickly access menus and change settings is great on the 80d. It’s so much quick than using the little trigger on the side here, especially if you need to jump all the way over to the other side of the settings.

But the real benefit of having this touch screen is for selecting your focus, especially in video mode.

On the 80d or you need to do is simply touch on the screen where you want to be in focus and it would quickly but smoothly go into focus. It’s fantastic.

Now this was a feature on the previous version, the 70d, but on the 80d it’s been even more improved and it’s really a feature I love and something I use so often.

Now we still don’t have a touch on the Nikon, but it would be something I’d like to see added in the next version of this camera.

CARD SLOTS

One area for me where Nikon is really thinking more for the consumer than Canon is in the card slots of these two cameras.

The 7200 comes standard with two cards slots, which allows you to either backup your shots that your taking or increase the storage on your camera.

And for me and a lot of other photographers, thats a big deals. Say you’re at a wedding or a big event, having that peace of mind is a big deal and I’ve got to give Nikon props for that.

I’m not sure if it will ever come, but I would like to see it in the next version of the 80d.

MENUS

So let’s quickly talk about the menus on the these two cameras.

Both menus work wondefulyly and are incredibly easy to scroll through.

I think both Canon and Nikon have both got there menus right, and are ahead of the game in terms of ease of use to other camera brands such as Sony.

In my testing though, I did find that the Nikon had slightly better software and was quicker to startup and scroll through the menus, so that’s something to consider if you need a fast performing camera.
