The Beautiful WHITE 'BLACK' Africans

Their complexion is white, their eyes are blue, and their hair is blonde. Despite this appearance, they are entirely of African origin. Most of these individuals reside in a single African country. I am referring to the Albino population, with Tanzania hosting the largest concentration of these unique and fascinating people.

Albinism is a genetic condition characterized by a lack of melanin pigment in the skin, resulting in very pale skin, eyes, and hair. People with albinism also experience varying degrees of visual impairment, often being legally blind and extremely light-sensitive.

Albinism affects individuals of all ethnic backgrounds, with a global frequency of approximately one in 17,000. Its prevalence varies considerably among different populations and is highest among people of sub-Saharan African descent. While albinism affects one in every 15,000 people in most African sub-regions, it affects one in every 1,400 Tanzanians. This higher prevalence is due to a mutation in the OCA2 gene, responsible for producing the melanin pigment. This gene mutation is carried (though not always exhibited) by one in every 19 Tanzanians.

The higher occurrence of albinism in East Africa is attributed to the isolated genetic pool of rural tribes and the less mobile society. Unfortunately, albinos often face social alienation and stigma. They are frequently subjected to derogatory terms like "ghosts" and "white goats," according to Fundikila Wazambi of the Legal and Human Rights Centre in Tanzania. This stigmatization limits their participation in socio-economic activities, access to essential social services, and freedom of movement. They are often blamed for natural disasters such as famine, drought, or locust invasions by those who believe they are cursed.

The deep, internal struggle of many with albinism often goes unnoticed. Their appearance can make them feel out of place within their racial group, raising the question: where do they fit?

In Tanzania, people with albinism face a constant threat to their lives. They are targeted for trafficking, with their body parts in high demand, whether they are dead or alive, adults or children. The average lifespan of a person with albinism in East Africa is just 30 years due to skin cancer, and only 2% live to the age of 40. This must change. Albinos are our brothers and sisters and deserve to live free from stigma with full societal support to lead happy, fulfilling lives. It is my hope that this video will inspire such a paradigm shift.
