https://www.HeartValveSurgery.com - During the past 10 years, there has been an important trend toward the use of aortic valve repair techniques for patients with aortic regurgitation (a leaky aortic valve).  Patient advantages of aortic valve repair include durability and enhanced quality of life without blood thinners.

However, patients with aortic valve disease, including bicuspid aortic valves, have critical questions about aortic valve repair techniques which are typically performed at cardiac centers that specialize in heart valve therapy. One of those questions is whether-or-not aortic valve repair can be performed using minimally-invasive surgical approaches.

For example, Peter recently asked, "I was diagnosed with aortic valve regurgitation. Can this procedure be done safely using minimally invasive techniques? What questions should I ask to help me figure out if the surgeon has enough experience and expertise?”

To answer this question, we interviewed Dr. Hiroo Takayama, Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center, at the American Association of Thoracic Surgery Conference. Dr. Takayama is an aortic valve specialist who has performed over 4,500 cardiac procedures including over 2,000 heart valve repair and replacement operations.
