Njanappana was written by devotional poet Poonthanam (1547–1640 AD) in Malayalam language in praise of Guruvayurappan, the presiding deity of Guruvayoor Krishna Temple in Kerala.
Poonthanam was possibly one of the fore runners of Bhakti cult in Kerala and his greatest work was Jnana Pana, This is written in a common man’s language and in a common man’s verse. It preaches the greatness of chanting of the Holy God’s names.
Some people term it as the “Bhagavad Geetha of Malayalam and others say it also combines the power of Bhaja Govindam of Adi Shankara.
Jnanappana consists of 360 lines of verse written in the pana metre of Malayalam poetry.
